Mallow United U11 Girls had a very successful outing at the C.W.S.S.L Blitz which was held at Mayfield United on Sunday last. In this age bracket, the teams play 9 aside with Mallow lining up with a
1-3-3-2 formation. In their opening game against Fermoy they took the game to their opponents with an early goal from Amelia King quickly settling any nerves. With the back three of Amy Dalton, Hayley Barrett and Ruby O’Shea dealing with the Fermoy attack, goalkeeper Tori O’Connor was rarely tested and sisters Alexia, Sophia and Amelia King controlled the centre while forwards Nessa McCormack and Rebecca Morrissey were able to press on in search of additional goals. The second goal duly arrived when Nessa McCormack hammered home to seal an opening 2-0 win.
In their second game Mallow came up against another north Cork rival Park United from Mitchelstown. For this game Tegan Lyons came into the back line for Hayley Barret and once again, following an excellent performance, Mallow came out on top with two goals from Nessa McCormack and one from Amelia King giving a final score of 3-0.
Game three saw Mallow, now with Hayley Barret back in for Ruby O’Shea, face up to West Cork side, Innishvilla. Once again, right from the start the Mallow girls took charge and with Amy Dalton leading the back three in complete control, they pushed on looking for the win. Alexia and Amelia King continued to dominate in midfield while sister Sophia was able to push forward to help in the attack and produced three great goals to see Mallow run out 3-0 winners for the second game in a row.
In their final game, Mallow came up against a strong Lakewood team. Ruby O’Shea returned to her left back position with Tegan Lyons taking a break. This was a very close game with Mallow goalkeeper Tori O Connor having to leave her line to clear on a number of occasions. However, Mallow pushed on and following a great ball from Amy Dalton, Sophia King raced through the Lakewood defence before slotting ball home past the opposition keeper. The game continued end to end but without any further score and so Mallow ran out 1-0 winners to complete the clean sweep and finish off a very successful day for a wonderful bunch of young girls.
With performances like this, the future of girls’ soccer in Mallow is assured. Mallow United U11 Girls train on Wednesday evenings in the Carrigoon Indoor Complex from 6pm to 7pm. New players welcome.
