Mallow United U14 Boys joined their U16 clubmates in the last 32 of the National Cup with a 2-0 win over Springfield Ramblers on Sunday morning. With two sides who have become very familiar with each other over the last few seasons it was no surprise that the first half was a tight affair with little between the sides with Mallow very strong in defence. Mallow were awarded a fortunate penalty which was well saved by the Springfield goal stopper to keep the score at 0-0 going into half time. As the second half progressed Mallow began to dominate the game putting pressure on the Springfield defence. The opening goal came 10 mins into the second half when a well floated free kick was deflected by a Springfield defender past his own goalkeeper to give Mallow a 1-0 lead. 12 minutes later saw a superb strike from Cathal Mullins who looped his 20 yard shot over the Springfield keeper to give Mallow a 2-0 lead. Mallow saw out the remainder of the game comfortably to take the win and progress to the National open draw and the last 32 of the competition.
