Youths Claim Top Spot

Mallow United U18 boys under the guidance of coaches John O’Dwyer and Dan Sheehan secured the first silverware of the season after finishing top of the Cork Youth League Division 1A with three games to spare at the weekend. After a superb 3-2 win away to Castleview last Wednesday night, the boys needed just 3 points from four remaining games to take title. With everyone looking forward to Saturdays scheduled home game and the opportunity to clinch the league in the Town Park, the failure of Bandon to fulfill the fixture meant the title was awarded without the kick of a ball which was much less than this team deserved.
On Easter Monday the boys were back in action as they travelled to Macroom to seek revenge against the only team that had taken points off them in their dominant league campaign. In very hot conditions and with a limited squad size, Mallow had to manage the pace of the game. After a slow start it was Macroom who raised the tempo as they hit the bar forcing Mallows Thomas Hickey to pull off a save. The near miss from Macroom was enough to get Mallow going and when a long range shot from Killian O’Brien was parried by the Macroom keeper, Sam Mangan followed up for Mallow to get his 2nd goal in 2 games. Kevin Omorro then began an attack from the wing beating two players on the touch line before shooting over before Seon Armstrong hit the post. Into the 2nd half the game was won when Jack O’Callaghan got a superb assist when he back heeled to Armstrong to make it 2-0 to secure 3 points for Mallow making it 19 league wins from 20 league games. Michael Fitzpatrick was man of the match with a great performance on the day. With two more league matches to go and the title secured everyone is now watching the battle for top goal scorer with Jack O’Callaghan on 17 and Seon Armstrong on 16. Next up is Kinsale away this Saturday. Well done boys!
