Munster Senior League – Division 2
Mallow United 3 – 0 Fermoy
A youthful Mallow United senior side provided great optimism for the future as they got the better of north Cork rivals Fermoy last Saturday in the Town Park. Fielding a team with 8 starters under the age of 22, Mallow would have been forgiven for taking time to settle into the game against a more experienced Fermoy outfit but Mallow started with a high tempo, bringing the game to their opponents with Sean McDonnell and Calvin McAulliffe probing the visitiors defence from out wide. It was McAulliffes through ball to Joe Carroll that created the first clear chance of the game, with Carroll rounding the keeper but he was unable to keep his shot on target. Carroll had a second opportunity shortly afterwards but saw his close range header clip the outside of the post and wide. Fermoy had opportunities of their own in the first half and Osinski in the Mallow goal needing to be alert to get behind a number of efforts from the edge of the area. Aaron Tuohy and James McCarthy brought a much needed physical presence to the heart of the Mallow defence and began to stamp their authority as the game progressed. With the game tied 0-0 at half time the opener came mid-way through the second half when substitute Keane Buckley was brought down in the area as he attacked the Fermoy goal. Joe Carroll made no mistake from the resulting penalty to put Mallow a goal ahead. Five minutes later Mallow got a second with Dylan McCaulliffe leading a counter attack following a Fermoy corner, a neat pass set Calvin McAulliffe free on the right who left the Fermoy keeper with no chance with a 25 yard effort into the top right corner. Buckley topped off an impressive appearance by clinching a third for Mallow from close range to give the home side a well deserved 3 points.
