Junior Team Clinch Promotion With Late Win

31 May 2018 by Mallow United PRO

Mallow United Juniors under the management of Joe Dowling clinched promotion after finishing 2nd in the Munster Senior League Junior Division 2. Mallow went into their final league game against Avondale United needing a win to move above Park United into second spot in the table. Despite dominating possession and creating some early chances, Mallow went a goal behind after a superb long range effort found its way to the back of the Mallow net. Mallow responded well and a brace from Jay Clow who was on top form saw Mallow go ahead. Much to the disappointment of the visitors however another long range effort from Avondale saw them level the score at 2-2 before half-time. The warm conditions made it a difficult evening for both sides and bodies began to tire as the game progressed. However chances continued to be created at either end with Michael Murphy in the Mallow goal pulling off a superb save after an Avondale attacker found himself 6 yards from goal with only the keeper to beat. At the other end Mallow looked like they might regain the lead when a Liam Dowling cross fell to the feet of Jay Clow but pressure from the Avondale defence meant Clow was unable to finish. With time running out Mallow began to press higher up the pitch and were rewarded with 10 mins to go when Jay Clow completed his hat-trick beating the keeper from a tight angle to put Mallow 3-2 ahead. Five minutes later Jojo Noonan sealed the win and promotion adding a 4th for Mallow with a fine finish to the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Final score Avondale United 2 – 4 Mallow United. Up next for the Juniors is the quarter final of the John Hayes Trophy on Tuesday next away to the winners of Rockmount and Kilreen.
