Mallow United B 1 – 0 Macroom A

Mallow United B hosted top of the table Macroom A who boasted a 100% record prior to kick off at St. Joseph’s Road last Saturday morning. The Mallow lads started with confidence and dominated the opening exchanges and Adam O’ Brien was unlucky not to open the scoring with a great effort from distance. Midway through the first half Mallow were unlucky now to have been awarded a penalty when a goal bound shot appeared to strike the hand of a Macroom player on the line but after some deliberation the referee decided against awarding a penalty. A few minutes later Mallow got the goal they deserved when great play in the middle of the park between Caleb Crone, James O’ Mahony and Stephen O’ Donovan found Charlie Hanover on the right wing who after beating a two defenders pulled the ball back for the incoming Rory Collins who cooly slotted the ball to the back of the net to give Mallow a half time lead. After the break Macroom put Mallow under intense pressure as they searched for the equalizer but were constantly thwarted by the heroic defending of Cormac Fitzgerald, Jack Quill and Louie Power with goalkeeper Denjoe O’ Riordan pulling off a number of great saves. While enduring pressure Mallow still played great football passing and moving the ball well looking for that second goal that would have settled this game. But 1 goal was to prove decisive as the home team claimed all 3 points and ended Macroom 100% record. As well as the good football on show, strength of character and a great team spirit were vital to this victory for this young team who have a bright future ahead.
