SFAI U14 National Cup Quarter Final
Mallow United 3 – 1 Cregmore Claregalway
Mallow United U14 boys are through to the semi-finals of the SFAI National Cup after a hard fought win over Cregmore Claregalway FC in Charleville on Sunday. The visitors from Galway dominated the opening exchanges going ahead with a well worked goal after 10 minutes with a fine finish after a penetrating delivery that split the Mallow defense. Despite having to gather the ball from the back of his net Osinski in the Mallow goal was in sharp form and played an important role along with the defensive back four of Ryan, O’Connell, O’Doherty and Creedon to keep Mallow from going two behind. As the first half progressed Mallow gradually began to settle with O’Grady winning possesion and Buckley, Magner, O’Leary and O’Sullivan linking well to create some openings at the edge of the Cregmore 18 yard box. A period of sustained Mallow pressure was rewarded after 23 mins when a Ben Buckley corner was deflected into the Cregmore goal with the presence of O’Doherty unnerving the visitors defense. Mallow were now in confident mood as Callum Carroll on the left wing beat two defenders and delivered a low cross for Amechi to finish from 6 yards to put the Cork boys a goal ahead. 7 minutes into the second half Amechi was on the score sheet again as he got his head on the end of a dangerous cross floated into the Cregmore box by O’Doherty. As the game entered its final stages Cregmore continued to press but Mallow held their nerve with Pa O’Grady and Paul Griffin to the fore battling hard to see out the win. Mallow now progress to the semi-finals of the competition where they will face the winners of St. Kevins Boys and Shamrock Rovers.
