U12 CWSSL Cup

Douglas Hall 1 – 2 Mallow United

Having gotten the better of Carrigaline in the previous round of the CWSSL Cup the reward for Mallow United U12 girls was a fixture against Douglas Hall on Saturday last. Playing a division below Douglas Hall in the league and with a match day squad tight on numbers Mallow may have been considered underdogs going into the game however the Mallow girls clearly didn’t think so as they put in a performance well deserving of their 2-1 win. With Titi Kone Sedgui between the posts for Mallow and a resilient back three of Niamh Williams, Saoirse O’Reilly and Emily O’Mahony the Mallow goals was well protected allowing the Mallow midfield trio of Molly Buckley, Danni Walsh and Lois Asante to assist Rachel Nolan and Katie Looney in the Mallow attack. The first half was a well-balanced affair with both sides probing for opportunities. The Mallow defence showed excellent discipline to null the Douglas Hall offence while Lois Asante and Rachel Nolan came close for Mallow. There was a set-back for Mallow 10 minutes into the second half when Douglas Hall broke from midfield and finished neatly past the Mallow keeper to but the home team a goal ahead. The Mallow spirit wasn’t dented however and the decision to allow Saoirse O’Reilly to join the attack was rewarded when she delivered a powerful 25 yard shot to equalise for Mallow 20 minutes into the second half. Mallow maintained a high tempo with Nolan and Looney pressing from the front and never allowing the Douglas Hall defence time to settle. With 3 minutes remaining Asante who had been a threat to the Douglas goal throughout the game finally got the goal she deserved breaking through the defence and slotting home form 6 yards to put Mallow 2-1 up. Despite a late surge from the home side Mallow held on for victory. The well-deserved Mallow win was notable both for the tireless effort and disciplined performance shown by the girls under the guidance of coaches Sophie Tuohy and Kim Walsh. Well done all!
