Hat-trick for Corbett as U15A Win at Home

Mallow United U15As resumed their season in fine style at the Academy pitch last Sunday afternoon with a convincing win over Carrigaline United. Mallow started strong and began threatening the Carrigaline goal from kick-off. Carrigaline defended well however and it took 15 minutes before Fionn Sheehan opened the scoring to put Mallow 1-0 up. 5 minutes later Mikey Corbett, blessed with footballing genes, got off the mark slotting home at the back post before a powerful header from Jared Westley put Mallow three up going into the half time break. Mallow sustained the pressure in the second half with Kevin Graham and Obrian Owsagen dominating in the centre of the park. It was Graham who punished the uncertainty in the Carrigaline defence to get a fourth for Mallow before Corbett attacking from the left penetrated the Carrigaline defence and slotted past the keeper for his second goal of the day. Stories recounted from Mallow United’s past often refer to the days when visitors to the Town Park could expect to witness Denis ‘the legend’ Corbett in Mallow United colours bagging a hat-trick and those present in the Academy Pitch on Sunday morning could be forgiven for thinking that they had stepped back in time as they watched Mikey Corbetts free kick loop over the Carrigaline wall and beyond the reach of the keeper for Corbetts third goal of the day. Mallow were six goals to the good but were not finished as Jack Martin and Daniel O’Connell also got on the scoresheet in the final ten minutes giving a Mallow a comfortable win and keeping them in the hunt for promotion.
