Munster Senior League Junior Division 2

Mallow United 5 – 1 Mayfield United

Mallow United Juniors returned to the top of the Munster Senior League Junior Division 2 with a comfortable victory at home to Mayfield United last Sunday afternoon. Mallow were unbeaten in the league going into the fixture having taken 10 points from their first four outings. Mallow began the game at a high tempo with James O’Driscoll posing a threat to the Mayfield goal twice within the first five minutes. Mayfield were under intense pressure and conceded a free kick on the edge of the box from which Derek O’Flynn managed to deceive the keeper and slot home the opener. The second goal came after some neat football on the right wing starting with Cian Cronin in full back, the ball was worked through midfield before Anthony Bowles shot high into the roof of the net. Mallow now began to exert their superiority and O’Flynn showed excellent composure to coolly slot home his second from 12 yards. Mayfield did create one or two opportunities and it took a instinctive save from Mick Murphy in the Mallow goal to keep them scoreless. With confidence continuing to grow in the Mallow attack, O’Flynn in dominant form found the back of the net twice more before half time gave Mayfield the opportunity to regroup. In the second half Mayfield showed that they weren’t going to roll over exerting some pressure on the Mallow defence and deservedly pulled a goal back though the result never really looked in doubt. Mallow now sit top of the table one point ahead of next weekends opponents Park United as Mallow travel to Mitchelstown for the north Cork derby.
